TRANSPORT & PACKAGING

Packaging

For our packaging we follow circular economic practices, and exclusively use polybags made from recycled plastic for Maloja clothing items. Our hangtags are also made from recycled cardboard.

Does the packaging have to be plastic? Of course, we've also asked ourselves this question. Polybags are still essential for transport, storage and handling by logistics to protect against moisture and contamination in particular. They prevent unnecessary returns and therefore lower emissions. The polybags are manufactured in Portugal for our European producers and in China for Asian producers, ensuring short transport routes. For us, however, this still isn't the end of the story. We're continuing to look for alternatives and are always trying to reduce waste and choose recycled materials.

For us, however, this still isn't the end of the story. We're continuing to look for alternatives and are always trying to reduce waste and choose recycled materials.

The German Packaging Law states that each "initial distributor" of packaging received by consumers in a yellow bag or sent to recycling centres must guarantee its disposal. Companies therefore follow one of the "dual systems" and get their packaging volumes licensed. These volumes are transferred to the dual system partner's sorting facilities by waste disposal companies and sent for recycling. Maloja has a contract with Bellandvision for this purpose.

Transport

Our central warehouse is located in Söchtenau, just a few miles away from the company headquarters in Bach (Bavaria).

Nearly 70 per cent of our goods are manufactured in Europe, so a large amount arrives at our warehouse by lorry. Some of the articles produced in China are shipped by freight to the warehouse in Söchtenau or to the US. For transport from China to Germany, over the past few years we've also heavily relied on freight trains along the "new silk road". Long-term capacity planning and early reservation of materials make it possible for us to only really have to make use of air transport for imports in exceptional cases.

Central export production

For exports, it is important to determine where the products are manufactured. Around two thirds of Maloja sellers are based in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, followed by neighbouring European countries. Within Europe, we serve customers from our central warehouse in Söchtenau and exclusively use land routes for transport.
Our customers in Korea, the US and Canada get their supplies directly by sea freight from the production operations in Asia. Goods produced in Europe are transported from our central warehouse to stores by air freight.
